Hindu Wedding – Olympia Hall
Olympia Hall
The ZaraZoo team travelled to Pietermaritzburg for Lerissa & Kapil’s colourful and vibrant Hindu wedding at Olympia Hall. In recent years, we have covered a number of Indian weddings in KZN. Follow the links at the bottom of this post to see more.
Kapil, a private banker and Lerissa, a doctor, met during Lerissa’s 5th year at medical school. It truly was love at first sight! Kapil proposed to Lerissa atop the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban with a banner that spanned the width of the bridge reading, “Lerissa will you marry me?” And, of course, it was a yes!
The couple got ready at their respective parental homes. Lerissa’s unique sari, bought in India, weighed a hefty 25kg – It gave the term “getting in shape for your wedding” a whole new meaning as she had to carry this extra load around the whole day. It was all worth it as she looked absolutely gorgeous!
In Larissa’s words:
My outfit was an “old Bollywood”, Tarun Tahiliani style piece with heavy gold embroidery and jeweled embellishments, from Mumbai.
For the couple photos we took them to the National Botanical Gardens in Pietermaritzburg. It was done before the ceremony as the rest of the day was just too packed to fit in the photo shoot later in the afternoon. The traditional Hindu Ceremony took place at Olympia Hall and was attended by 80 close family and friends. The stage included layers of richly coloured drapes upon which the mandap stood with garlands and hanging brass bells dangling within.

After the ceremony, guests were treated to drinks and snacks and then the couple slipped away for an outfit change for the Modern Cocktail reception. The latter was attended by no fewer than 500 guests! The room was fully draped in matte gold with royal Indian colour splashes of emerald green, purple, cerise and red. The guests mingled and chatted, with a vibrant string quartet, from the Durban Philharmonic Orchestra, playing live for their enjoyment.
Cocktails were served in a bespoke, Haute canapé style per butler service. An array of traditional Indian eats with a modern twist were on offer – the mini bunny chows, as well as the spiced paneer skewers, were a hit! For dinner, traditional vegetarian biryani was served and the highlight of the desserts was the modern gastronomical cold live station where ice cream was made per order with liquid nitrogen. Throughout the night, the program director and TV personality, Leeanda Reddy, kept the crowd in stitches with her humour and added an irreplaceable touch to the event.
The event was coordinated by specialist Indian Wedding planner, Yashika Mungal from 3rd Eye Events.
