Neethlingshof – Lilian & Haydn

What’s up with all the British and Irish girls snatching our boys? Like so many South African guys, Haydn went to London for a working holiday… and the rest is history. In October we did Johan & Deborah’s wedding – same story!
I met up with Lilian & Haydn in London when I worked there in September. Their E-session, done on the South Bank of the Thames, rank under my top 5 Engagement shoots to date.
Neethlingshof just outside Stellenbosch was the chosen venue for the wedding. It has one of the most amazing lanes of pine trees, leading up to the winery. They had an outdoor ceremony on the lawn. The weather was perfect – clear skies and maybe a tad too hot.
I don’t normally take this many shots of the bottom half of people, but Haydn’s polished grey shoes on this red carpet was something out of the ordinary. With the ceremony the sun was extremely harsh and the fact that Hayden was dressed in a white suit, did not help me a lot. Us photographers prefer a bit of cloud cover, to diffuse the harsh shaddows – and on this day, there was none at all.
The trees – how amazing is that! I got totally lost with the lines and the late afternoon light falling on the trunks. The rest of the photoshoot was done in a field to the top of this lane. These guys were amazing to work with – fun, relaxed and game for anything – Thanx! – you made my job a breeze!
The shot below, together with the first shot on this post, are my favourites. I used a 15mm wide angle lens on my Canon 1D MKIII. The trees were already bent and leaning over, but by shooting with this lens, the trees got distorted a bit more to create this hugging effect!

Desiree,
You will have to ask Neethlingshof, the wine estate, permission to use their grounds. You can contact them by following the internet link to their website on this blog post.
