Just last week, I posted Louis and Marieke’s E-session that was done at Big Bay. We shot their wedding this past weekend at Lala Nathi Gountry Guesthouse in Harrismith (Free State). Yes, the Free State…
But it was worth the 6 hours travel (from Cape Town) to get there, because I met the most amazing friendly and hospitable people.

Our style of photos can be described as journalistic / reportage, with classic elements. When people are spontaneous and relaxed, we get our best shots – like these below.
Louis, an ex provincial rugby player (WP and Griekwas) was also very relaxed – joking around with his best men before the ceremony started. The guy on the left, Duane referred us to Louis and Marieke. It turned out that we had already done the weddings of quite a few of their friends… Thanks Duane!
The ceremony was held in the St John the Baptist Catholic church in Harrismith. Cool little church – great features to work with but very dark inside! If it was not for my Canon 1D MKIII that I can easily push to 2000 ISO, it would have been a problem.
We have been guilty of doing the “standing in a row” group shots for far too long. Like with the couple shots, these photos should reflect the character and personality of the family. I think the photo below is spot on!
Marieke’s mom owns an amazing guest house in Harrismith, with acres and acres of land. The photo below was taken in a dry dam on the property.
Something a bit more cheeky….
So this is what the Free State looks like – big open expanses with green grass and blue skies (in summer).
The reception was done in the magnificent thatched roof hall at Lala Nathi. In true Afrikaans style, the single men tried to disrupt the groom’s speech. Louis kept cool and delivered tear jerker. Personally I think this tradition sucks. I can understand that the groom is bugged while thanking people, but when it comes to his expression of love for his wife, it should be respected!
