I’ve done a lot of weddings and this one easily rates as the most chilled out and relaxed wedding ever!
The Formula:
- An Awesome bloke and a pretty girl th at knows how to enjoy life.
- Relaxed attitude.
- Le Pique Nique under the frangrant pines at Boschendal.
- Perfect South African summer blue skies with a little breeze to cool you down.

This was a very special wedding for me, as Cathrine is my wife’s sister – a family affair. Forgive me for all the pictures of my own kids further down the post, I think they are the most adorable and awesome kids ever!!!
Catherine got ready at the very posh Cape Grace Hotel near the V & A Waterfront. This hotel was recently voted as one of South Africa’s finest and boasts with a 5 star rating. The rooms have spectacular, views of Table Mountain to the one side and the Waterfront to the other. It almost has a mediteranean feel to it – sorry got a bit carried away with the hotel…

In retrospect, it was a great decision, to have a picnic wedding at Boschendal – but not without a little bit of risk… Just the night before we had thunder and lightning and big big drops of rain!!! Just 12 hours later we had the most perfect weather! Apart form the amazing surroundings of vineyards and mountains, Boschendal also has these amazing old pine trees that provides that very needed shade on a hot day like this.
The Ceremony was done outdoors, under the Gazebo, with the lunch picnic tables literally 20 metres away!

The little girl in the photo below is Zara, my daughter after whom we named our business. This must be one of my favourite pictures of her. I love her naughty smile and zest for life… And she is quite photogenic as well.
The only bad thing of an early start like this wedding is that the photo session had to happen at midday – a photographers nightmare – at least in the South African sun. The sun is very harsh and casts nasty shadows over the eyes. A good friend of mine told me once that a good photo needs a twinkle in the eye – believe me, this is hard to achieve with shadows you get in the direct sun at midday.
A photographer friend of mine covered a wedding for us the day before and was my second shooter. Aziz runs a very successful wedding photography business in London, Aira Photography. He has a very creative eye and a way to bring out the best in women. Aziz shot the 3 images below and a few other pics in this post, including the opening image of Saul being congratulated by his friends.
Having a picnic wedding is certainly not the norm… and jumping around for photos on your wedding day also not, but this is Catherine and Saul. Saul has this thing for jumping – go check out what these guys got up to at their E-session – crazy stuff…

I warned you that there is a few photos of my kids in this one. My two boys. Aaron is 4 and a half and Christian 6. They almost look like they can be twins. They are the best of mates and both of them have an unique personality. Chris is the caring one and Aarron likes to think he is the tough cookie.
Another break from the norm… Why not a game of French Boules after lunch?

Boschendal wine estate is one of the oldest wine producers of the new world (1685). It is situated between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek in the Cape Winelands of South Africa.
